There is little doubt that the house cat developed naturally from ancient wild cats, and the first house cat came from Africa.
Cats first started to live around people in Egypt about 6,000-7,000 years ago. This is about the same time that Egyptians began storing grain(谷物)in buildings.Scientists used to believe that people tamed(馴化)cats to catch mice and protect the grain. However, cats don't like to be told what to do! Now,scientists believed that cats followed mice and learned to accept people. Finally, some of the cats began to grow comfortable around people, and these were smaller cats that needed protection. As these cats and people got used to each other, then they moved in together.Around 5,000 years ago, cats started to live with people.
Soon cats were in Greece, then the Middle East and China. They moved along Egyptian business roads keeping away mice and keeping people around them. After the Romans came to Egypt, they also accepted the cats and brought them to Europe. These cats likely bred with other cats to form the many kinds of house cats we have today.
House cats still have a lot in common with their wild relatives. Cats sleep a lot to save energy just like wild cats. They will often get food at night as well. House cats are generally peaceful and friendly, but be careful! If a cat feels it is in danger, it will fight back—just like a wild cat.

We've all heard the forecasts(預測): flooding all over the shop, homes damaged in storms, entire cities under water...And with the climate emergency only getting worse, that means the coming decades will likely see architects and urban planners having to rethink entirely the way they design cities.
Some think we may even need brand-new cities, and many are looking to the sea for inspiration. Look at Danish star architect Bjarke Ingels and his frankly ridiculous Oceanix City project. This huge, six-sided,tsunami-resistant city would be fixed to the seafloor and be able to produce its own heat, power and water. Because it floats, it would move as the environment around it changes. As well as the hypothetical (假設的) Oceanix City, the architect has more clear plans.BiodiverCity-yep, that’s its real name-would include three islands providing homes for up to 18,000 people. Cars would be banned altogether. Boats would be people's means of transportation.
One clear disadvantage of these cities? They could only house a minority of the people who live in big cities. But experts think floating cities may be a way to relieve the climate crisis. Architect Kunle Adeyemi, who runs Amsterdam-based firm NLE,has already created several floating buildings, from schools to concert halls, which move with rising water levels.“Controlling water is going to be a major challenge for future cities,” he says, adding that the issue of water abundance and scarcity (缺乏) is already shaping architecture practice, especially in Africa.
But for Adeyemi, it's not all darkness. He sees this as an opportunity to enhance (加強) the relationship between water, land and humans. So perhaps floating cities aren't just a weak and belated(遲來的) reaction to climate change. They could bring us closer to our planet, too.
11. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?( )
A. To list future climate emergencies.
B. To introduce the background of new ideas of future cities.
C. To offer ways to deal with climate change.
D. To show the harm of extreme climate change.
12. Where will the Oceanix City be fixed?( )
A. In the deep sea.
B. On the coast of the sea.
C. On the surface of the sea.
D. In a place with little water.
13. Which of the following statements is NOT true about BiodiverCity?( )
A. It would include three islands.
B. People can't drive cars in the city.
C. People in the city travel mainly by boat.
D. It would house more than 18,000 people.
14. What is experts’attitude toward the Oceanix City project?( )
A. Negative.
B. Doubtful.
C. Indifferent.
D. Optimistic.
15. What is the best title for the passage?( )
A. Climate Change Will Worsen
B. Floating Cities Will Come Soon
C. Could Floating Cities Be the Future?
D. What Will Climate Change Cause in the Future?

Drought is happening because of climate change. California had its driest year in the century. The government declared a drought emergency, asking all Californians to save water in every possible way. 16 .
Small things can add up. You've probably heard the following tips before. Don't let water running while you are washing the dishes, brushing teeth or shaving(剃須). 17 Water outdoor plants in the morning or evening, so the water doesn't evaporate(蒸發(fā)) quickly.
Replace old appliances. How old is your toilet? If it’s from before 1990, it could be using up to 6 gallons per flush(沖水).Newer toilets may use as little as 1.28 gallons or less. 18 Upgrading your dishwasher, washing machine and any other water-intensive appliance will also result in saving water costs.
19 Keep an eye on your water bill. If it is higher than normal without any reasons, investigate whether you have a leak somewhere. Depending on the type of your water meter(水表),you may be able to monitor the meter with the main water valve(閥門)in your home turned off and see whether the water meter is still changing. 20 .
All in all, consider your overall lifestyle of water usage and do everything within your power to use less water. Individual action can make a big change.
A. Individual action matters, though you can't save California on your own.
B. Find out the potential problem.
C. They can save a lot per household per day.
D. You may also use a smart detector to tell you whether there’s a problem.
E. Only run washing machines and dishwashers when you have a full load.

For many people in the world, wasting food has become a habit: buying more food than we need at markets, 36 (let) fruit and vegetables spoil at home or buying more food than we can eat.
Such behavior puts extra pressure 37 our natural resources. When we waste food, we waste much labor, effort, 38 (invest)and precious resources used to produce it, not to mention the resources used in transporting and processing it. In short, wasting food increases greenhouse gas emission and 39 (contribute) to climate change.
It's 40 urgent issue. In fact, tons of food is lost or wasted 41 (global) every day. The part wasted at the consumer or retail level 42 ( call) food waste. We make this distinction to address the root 43 (cause) of this problem.
